I am fascinated by the flag design. Although it as the Australian flag looks like, the arrangement of stars is different from our national flag. Our flag is the “Southern Cross” on the right side of the Union Jack and a larger star (the Commonwealth star) under the Union Jack. Perhaps the painter had a guess as to what the Aussie flag looked like ….

A message from JohnGWährend some research I came across a photo on Flickr. My late father was a radio operator with 35 Sqdn and over the years I’ve gathered a lot of information about the squadron’s time in Graveley. I do not think that the photo a 35 Squadron aircraft displays. I’ve used the photo of many of the Lancs by 35 and all of them have an unusual modification. If you look at the photo again to look, you will notice a small, oval-shaped, Plexiglas panel in the main nasal blisters. Early Lancs had a rectangular plate, the later oval, had but 35 Sqdn Lancs taken over a small bubble in this position. Crew photos were only rarely by air crews. In general, they were the next Lanc at hand (the closest to the airport building) taken. It may be that this is at Graveley Lanc (alternate landings were quite common) and ended up as a “visitor” it would be near the building have been reserved. Since the markings are very picturesqe, it may simply have been used as a suitable setting. Given the Australian symbology, I suspect that this one of Lanc Aussie Squadrons belong. Many GrüßeJohnG

My father flew in a simular one in the Second World War, was a B-17 Flying Fortress, he was a gunner and radio man. My advice is to check with the Air Base, see matching records and have them with addresses of places where he served. nice photo.

I have a simular picture. My father and some mates were joking around and put a For Sale sign in front of the plane, I think one of the men was Peter Long and another fellow named Jack, I can not remember the others. He was so proud, he said one of the men cried when it was over. My mother was WAF Royal Air Force and my dad pulled recruited. My father was a wireless mechanic and my mother an electrician on the plains. Lancasters were her favorite. When they designed gave her the choice to cook, nurse, or electricians. She said: “I’m not cooking for so many and I do not want to be a nurse,” Well, they wired aircraft. She joked that a girl would be in the barracks with her helmet on, as they shake bombed. My mother thought that was pretty funny. She darned socks for the boys in their spare time. That’s how she met my father. He gave her a pair of socks to darn. They spoke of sad times as well, like a friend named Blackie died when a plane came back limping, tragically met him at the airport one night, while he picked mushrooms for them to eat. Mom loved Lancaster and the day after she died, which was stored in a Mount Hope in Canada, cut off from one another plain, oddly enough. A plaque in her memory hangs on the door hangers in the shadow of Lancaster. I will do the same for my father, one day, when funds are available. Donations are collected to the planes restore. If I am not mistaken in an unacceptable manner, the flight engineer, my father, WJ (John) Cunningham. He was certainly a Lancaster Flight Engineer, but not Australian. I did not resolve other service information, hope, a few points.
