I’ve often mentioned that I work at RONA, which is a Canadian competitor to Home Depot and Lowes.

When I was growing up, our family business (Pleasant View Farms) was engaged in the wholesale and retail sales of farm and landscaping/nursery supplies: hardware, fencing, pesticides, plants, hay/straw for bedding, containers, firewood, seed, clothing, paint and on and on.

In 2002, after many years in various endeavours (museums, teaching English, marketing, I was accepted in the seasonal department at RONA, where I employed the skills and knowledge that I had garnered so many years before at Pleasant View Farms.

If you visit while I’m at RONA, you’ll likely find me in the greenhouse and/or garden centre. I also spend a good deal of time on the seasonal hardware floor.

It’s just part-time… a day or two a week, but it suits nicely.

What happened when the Obelisk returned to Aksum? In fact, the authorities had no funds to re-erect the Obelisk. It didn’t really matter because the Obelisk was already at home -symbolicaly at least. What mattered was the publicity surrounding this return and the advertisment for Ethiopia.

In 1998, the Ethiopian prime minister, Meles Zenawi initiated a pilot project "Ethiopian Cultural Heritage Management" with the World Bank. The goal was to promote an economic development through the valorisation of heritage. What happened with the project? First the project was delayed because of the war. Second, it came as a choice of some of Ethiopian cultural heritage: just the Ethiopian world heritage sites were chosen. And then? Then some training of the Ethiopian heritage staff have started, creating databases, inventories. Art and craft producers have been trained to new comprehensive means of production and to modernised traditional productions.

And then what happened? In fact, nothing has happened yet and maybe it went worst. Anyway one wonders which kind of ‘cultural product’ can come out from a World Bank project.

This is what will be explained in the next captions of this story.

It is all very "Adrian Mole" keeping a diary, but it is something that I have tried to do for years and years. It only takes a couple of days of not being bothered and then you simply give up, and it is a shame as I find it not only interesting to read back to see what you did at a particular time, but also handy at times too. There then are two types of diary, one that records your thoughts and feelings, and one that records your activities; maybe you can combine the two. I find nothing more interesting than reading books of people’s diaries, possibly someone who was a no-one and yet got their life diary published and so off you go and read about their everyday, possibly boring, life. Writing such a diary can be enjoyable too, sitting up last thing at night going through what you have done during the day, your feelings and possibly your thoughts on the future.

The whole problem is though is that you might find yourself spending more time writing about your life than actually living it! It would be great to find an hour each day to jot everything down and it would make such interesting reading afterwards too, but I don’t have time to do that and, more importantly, I don’t have the discipline and motivation to keep it up! However, I would still find it handy and interesting if I could someway record at least things I have done and include "memory triggers". Triggers that mean nothing to nobody apart from yourself. You might jot down "lunch at pub" which doesn’t really say that much, but it might trigger your memory to go back to that moment and you remember how it was sunny, how you had a sausage roll and pint of Sussex. Possibly a bit boring again to anyone else, but for you that trigger has taken you back in your mind to that moment.

So the whole idea then is triggers for the emotional side of things, and simply recording what you have done for the practical side of things. I came across the idea of the "One Sentence Journal" (OSJ) from one or two websites and that seemed to fit everything that I was looking for. The idea with the OSJ is that you just sum up the whole day with one sentence, giving you 365 sentences per year and a whole load of memory triggers included. I kind of adapted that a bit to my own use and keep the one sentence idea but maybe have a "one sentence" a number of times during the day as I do different things. The whole day then is recorded as a number of single sentences which is more than enough to record the day, includes plenty of memory triggers, and is quick and simple to do (ie you will tend to keep doing it).

I started this then using a simple text file which did the job fine and being simple text meant that any computer system and application would be able to read it (completely future proof!). This however came against the problem I was having all the time which was I had to be on a computer in order to quickly add something to it. I kind of stopped adding things outside of work and slowly I couldn’t be bothered to find the file and add things to it at work too.

What I needed I thought was something that would accept my input and then in the background do the rest, ie add it to a text file somewhere, date it and really leave me to get on with things while it did it all. For this then I wrote a number of Bash scripts on my Linux system to do everything I needed. It accepted text and then filed it in the correct place for me. Fantastic, but still fully digital and meant I had to log into a Linux shell to use it (unless at sometime I could have had got round to putting a web front end to it maybe).

I then came across Twitter which seemed to suit the idea of OSJ completely and infact I noticed some people did use it for that. Never wanting to trust any online service (what happens if/when Twitter goes down and losses its data?!) I wrote another Bash script to grab my Twitter entries using the Twitter API and then feeding that into the existing scripts I had written. So, everytime I added something on twitter, it soon arrived in the correct text file on my computer for me at anytime to look at.

Using twitter solved one problem as I no longer needed to be in front of a computer to add things as I could use the SMS feature of Twitter to submit things. However, never a great mobile phone fan, I soon tired of trying to type things out on a phone number pad! Also, I couldn’t really record things fully as I knew my Twitter feed was available for everyone and also probably being picked up by Google. I couldn’t mention names, companies, projects and really it seemed like I was having to write in code which possibly I would forget years in the future. I did set my Twitter account to be private, but I still thought that Twitter continues to store my data and maybe one day it could easily share it with the world if it liked, who knows?!

So….. I looked at my Moleskine and thought here is something I have with my all the time along with a pen. Why don’t I simply jot things down in there seeing as that is what it is for. If I want to store it digitally one day then I can simply scan the pages in which would be no problem (with my new super duper scanner I had bought!).

My OSJ pages then contain a date for each day. Starting with the format of YYYYmmdd (just habbit as someone who scripts and programs bits and pieces!) it was hard to read, so then used a more human readable date, lining off the end of the each week so I can quickly see the weeks. I tend to fit one week of these per page so it becomes easy to read back. For each entry I have the time and then the OSJ bit.

It is quick and simple, you write and then forget. It makes interesting reading and is handy to remember what and when you did something. It is pretty boring for a third party to read, but for me it is fill with memory triggers.

Working Online

Question by Frank J: Working online ?
Lots of people say you can make money online. But do they actually do it and know of websites or are they talking out their piehole?

Please list any sites you know 100% are honest and good, and what the work entails. Thanx.

Answer by Eric Gees
Well, I’m freelance web programmer, I work online and yes I make money and pay taxes. check scriptlance website and rentacoder and some other sites. they are good to start at if you have skill. there are sites involve other kind of works, other than programming like writing, or entering data, or typing. but the more unique the more possible money making.

also try making a blog, but you need skill in writing, and popularity, you need to try, and have the will, don’t expect too much, but don’t expect less. have the will , the plan and work on it and you ll make money.

other choice selling things on ebay, but you have to find things unique and cheaper than market value for such items, or at least rare, or antique,

there are people who make money by selling on their sites, ideas of things, buying used stuffs in lower value and selling them at higher. or making things and selling them. but all those stuffs need you learn ,plan, and work.

don’t follow easy money schemes, easy money only comes by lottery, but that’s not too easy to get either

Plot

—– Quitters, Inc. ….Cigarette smoker Dick Morrison (James Woods), recommended by a friend, joins Quitters, Inc. to kick his habit. Clinic counselor Dr. Vinnie Donatti (Alan King) explains the clinic’s uniquely persuasive method—if Dick smokes a cigarette, various horrors will befall his wife and child.

Using the cat that Donatti’s assistant Junk has caught in the street, Donatti demonstrates the first of these horrors: The cat is locked in a cage and given electric shocks. Donatti explains that if his new client should be caught with a cigarette, Dick’s family will be subjected to the same shocks while he is forced to watch.

Dick ultimately cannot resist the temptation, and his wife pays the price. The family then have a dinner party with friends but Dick discovers the women is missing a finger.

.
—– The Ledge……Former tennis pro Johnny Norris (Robert Hays) is involved with a woman whose estranged but jealous husband is a crime boss, casino owner Cressner (Kenneth McMillan). Cressner, who will bet on anything, wins a wager that the cat will successfully cross the busy road outside his casino. He takes the cat home.

Cressner kidnaps Norris. As an amusing form of revenge, Cressner blackmails Norris into a dangerous ordeal: Norris must circumnavigate the exterior ledge of Cressner’s penthouse apartment in a gothic skyscraper. If he can make it all the way around, Cressner will grant his wife a divorce. If Norris refuses, Cressner will call the police and have him arrested for possession of drugs, which have been planted in Norris’ car.

Norris agrees. During the circumnavigation attempt Cressner appears on balconies and at windows to taunt and distract him. Despite Cressner’s efforts Norris makes it back to Cressner’s apartment and they engage in a fight which one of Cressner’s accomplices is shot and Norris is helped by the cat. Norris gains the upper hand and forces Cressner to do the circumnavigation himself. Cressner then comes across a pigeon and tries to kick it away but falls off the ledge and to his death watched by the cat.
.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
.
—– The General…..The cat is adopted by a little girl, Amanda (Drew Barrymore), who names him General. The cat runs afoul of the girl’s mother (Candy Clark), who believes he will harm their pet parrot.

Despite Amanda’s protests, the mother puts the cat out at night. As a consequence he is unable to protect Amanda from a malevolent troll that has also taken up residence in the house until he manages to find another way in. The troll kills the parrot and then tries to steal Amanda’s breath but General comes in and battles the troll but the troll escapes leaving Amanda and her parents to discover the death of the parrot. The parents are convinced that General killed the parrot but the father discovers a wound on the cat (caused by the trolls dagger in the fight) and starts to have doubts on the mother’s belief that the parrot caused the wound by pecking General.

General is then taken to the animal shelter by the mother and is scheduled to be euthanised the next day (by the mother’s request) but General escapes when given food and makes his way back the girls house.

General again battles and successfuly defeats the troll, causing a great deal of noise. The ruckus awakens her parents, who are initially incapable of getting to her, due to the door being blocked. Once they manage to get into her room, the girl explains to them that General saved her from the troll. The parents are at first unwilling to believe the story until part of the troll’s corpse is discovered as well as the dagger that caused General’s wound in the first battle. Amanda uses the justification that General will keep her safe in case others like her first assailant appear and General is allowed to stay inside at night to act as a protector for Amanda.

Insult to injury: Wallace Weatherholt lost his hand to an alligator and was arrested for feeding the beast

The 63-year-old lost his right hand after an alligator leaped out of the water and bit off the limb.

The alligator was tracked down and killed, but doctors were unable to reattach the hand.

Holidaymakers on the airboat told wildlife officials Weatherholt had been dangling a fish over the water to entice the alligator.

It is a criminal offence to feed alligators.

Weatherholt, who works at Captain Doug’s Small Airport Tours in Everglades City, was with a party of six tourists when the attack occurred.

Despite losing his hand he was able to steer the airboat back to the base where he was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

Feeding gators is a second-degree misdemeanor in Florida.
