We have been a lot of places together, but that’s all over now. I couldn’t fix what was broken about you, so I had to let you go – even though I didn’t want to.
When I found you on the luggage carousel at BWI, this is what they had done to you.
I love to travel.
My parents gave me my first real piece of luggage in 1970, for my high school graduation – an American Tourister hard side three suiter, in green. (Green was a cool luggage color back then. You have to trust me on this.) I used it all the way until 1994, when a bottle of Jamaican Jerk Spice Rub burst inside it on the way home from a trip to Kingston. Jerk spice is pretty pungent, and I like it on chicken and burgers, but it’s not so hot on clothes. So I bought this one.
Hard sided luggage is kind of expensive, but it really protects your stuff – that’s why I like it. I got a Samsonite because it was the best there was at the time (maybe still) and I didn’t want to have to worry about my stuff getting broken or stolen while I was traveling. I always keep my can’t-afford-to-never-see-it-again stuff in my carry on.
Some places where Sammy and I have been:
Some good times:
Jamaica, 6 times
The Bahamas
Las Vegas, twice
LA
Colorado Springs, CO, twice
Williamsburg, VA 5 times
Washington, DC, 5 times
Richmond, VA
Ocean City, MD – too many times to count
Rehoboth Beach, DE (see above)
Boston
Disney, Orlando
Outer Banks, NC – 4 times
Some sad times, too:
My mom’s and then my dad’s funerals, in Wilmington, DE
My Uncle Bill’s funeral in Wisconsin
My father-in-law’s funeral in Hagerstown, MD
It has traveled in the bellies of buses and airplanes, on trains, on roof racks, and in car trunks from everything from VW’s to Mercedes – and it never let me down. Not once.
I love to travel, and I even love packing for the trip. I guess it’s the old Eagle scout in me. I’m one of those guys who start to get excited folding, packing, adjusting all the stuff that’s going with me because it means I’m going somewhere, anywhere, for a fresh experience and to see something new, or to see something I’ve seen before and loved, again.
I love the way luggage feels when it’s empty, because it’s going to be filled soon, and I love the way it feels full, because it means I’m on the road or about to be in the air.
I love packing the car trunk with all of our bags, getting it all in right, and maybe getting it all in a little better than the last trip.
I love the hustle of airports, leaving early because I never sleep much before I travel – I’m too excited about it. I love seeing all of the people, and talking to other travelers.
I love customs lines, entering another country or coming home to this one, trying to guess where all of the other people are from, and seeing the different look of passports.
I really love getting my passport stamped, because that means I’m somewhere else, ready to get into a fresh culture and a fresh part of the world.
I guess – no, I’m sure of it – that when this bag was broken, somehow I felt like all of those other places and experiences were broken, too. I got mad about it because no one seemed to care.
I know "it’s just a bag."
I also know it’s a whole lot more, too.
I wanted to keep it, even though it didn’t and wouldn’t work right. I thought I could still use it for car trips. My wife said, and I’m sure she was right, that I needed to let it go. I know it’s just a thing. It’s just a thing that that has been with me for some special times, experiences and places, and more importantly, special people in my life.
So today I said goodbye. I put it out with the trash for pickup. And as I type this, looking out our front window at 9:40 a.m., I literally just saw the trash guys pick it up, toss it in the back with the rest of Ann Arundel County’s broken things, and drive off, back up our street.
Am I too attached to stuff that’s attached to good times, and good people? Maybe. Probably.
Yes.
Goodbye. And thanks for everything.

Forget online jobs. Most are scams. Real online jobs are few and far between and require real skills and experience.
Things like Avon, Tupperware, etc MIGHT make a little money, provided you are good at selling, have lots of contacts, and have the time to do customer calls or parties.
Thing about personal service things like babysitting, sewing/alterations, cake decorating, tutoring, etc. These are things you can actually do from home and work around your daughter’s needs.
Hi Diana,

Goodbye Sammy. My mom had luggage that was given to her for grad. also. It looked just like this but it was a crazy kinda peach color. I still have a piece of it today. I also got luggage from her for my grad. 🙂
BTW~ Carl once had sand from the beach he was bringing back and when they checked his bag they opened the container and dumped it all in the suitcase.:P
This pic makes me wanna… fire the TSA inspector. They don’t need to be this way.
Luggage for graduation??? Is that really a popular trend back in the day??? It’s cool…Tho. Well u seem to have traveled quite a bit with them…Awesome.
Hope u have a happy friday earl and a great weekend as well!!!

This pic makes me wanna… travel lite
The same demise happened to my SAMatha too!
I’m contemplating FedEx (too) the next time I travel ….
I feel ___ delight at all your notes and a kind of humor about this memorial service for your Sam luggage. It is a fitting tribute to a loyal traveling companion, AND I totally feel understanding that one would be sad to part with it AND I feel understanding that airlines throw stuff around and break open luggage…..my soft sided Travelpro that was locked had its lock broken as well….yes, they throw things and break things……it happens and it will continue to happen ….. c’est la vie….sad but true….
AND i feel you could just keep this traveling ‘companion’ and fill it with photos from all those fabulous and sad and memorable trips ….. no need to throw it away by any means. Keep it for STORING your valuable treasured memories.

Airport inspectors do not need to be so harsh on luggage.
My aunt was coming back from Chile and she had wine in her bag…one of the bottles broke…and I’m sure you can imagine that was the end of that bag.
I feel like beeing on a plane…love to fly 🙂

RIP Sammy.
Just a note, I was told never to lock suitcases – it looks suspicious. So if they need to open the suitcase, then can just by unlatching or unzipping, without (hopefully) major damage.
Is it possible to bring the bag in and get the left lock fixed? Or is it not worth it?
I feel like an adventure.(from the Feel Me, Post Me! group)
Adious case!
I feel the beginining of an epic (from the Feel Me, Post Me! group)
Well, Sammy is retired, now. After travel for so long…
Nice story Earl
It’s just a bag…but it held so many memories. Even though you have to let it go, the memories will still be with you! I know the feeling. I get attached to things like that, too 🙂
goodbye 🙂
My graduation hard sider is cherry red. I will never look at it the same after reading your ode to Sammy. "sniff"
Interesting history with your sammy.Nice post. 😉
Great photo. I love the notes! Sorry about your case. At least you have a good sense of humor about it.
I swear that I had the same piece of luggage and like you it had seen many interesting trips.
The lock was busted but I taped it until the other was destroyed.
Sorry to hear about you loss but I really enjoyed the tales.
I am a TSA Inspector. If your bag is locked, I try every means necessary to open your bag. I have never popped or broken a lock or bag because of it. I have, however, had many, many bags on their last legs, some even have been taped together by the passenger. If you travel with a crappy bag that has a broken zipper, and I have to get into it (Not all airport have x-ray machines for checked baggage, many don’t) and the zipper comes off track, I couldn’t have prevented that, but I do tape it back shut so that all of your belongings don’t fall out. The type of bag that you had, when locked, has to be "broken" to open it… Assuming that the airline could not track you down, or even tried. I can only speak for myself here, but I know that other people can be rude and lazy. Sorry about your bag! I am the same way with things that I travel with.
BTW… locked bags DO NOT look suspicious. Almost everyone has locks, TSA-approved locks, that we can open. And, if you travel with a combination lock that is not tsa-approved, or any lock for that matter, if you leave it hooked to the bag, we will lock it together when we are finished inspecting the bag.
I had a Sammy (Samsonite) until recently, too!
When I was a high school kid, I swore I would never go over seas and never fly with airplane but this suitcase served me since my first oversea trip… I am traveling quite often nowadays!
Wow you travelled quite a bit with her didn’t you?? I have the same one, but only for about two years. It too has already travelled quite a bit( twice to tokyo, at least ten times to london, and to germany and France too many times to be counted). Sorry for your loss 🙂
